The Selangor SPCA Equine Welfare Fund was incorporated 29 March 2006
Vision: Comprehensive system of reporting, monitoring, rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming
Mission: To alleviate suffering of equine
Objectives: Promote equine welfare education and promulgate awareness, Protect and prevent equine cruelty, Provide humane euthanasia for ill and suffering equine The Rescue Centre was set up in 2007 and is the first of its kind in Malaysia. It has 10 stables at the Awana Horse Spelling Station and takes in suitable horses for rehoming seized by the DVS. Selangor SPCA retains legal ownership of the horses with the horses being place in trust under care of its beneficial owners. This will give SPCA the right to take back the equine if it becomes apparent that the horse has not been given proper care.
Action: The Selaongor SPCA acts only on cruelty reports received. SPCA investiagates the complaint and will advice the owner on proper care (a notice is posted if the owner is not present). The SPCA inspectors will follow up the case in the following weeks and failure to improve the standard of living for the animal will result in the case being forwarded to the Dept. of Vet Services for their attention and action. In severe or emergency situations, the DVS is notified immediately so that they can resuce the animals. If the report received is not within easy distance (2 hours drive) of Selangor / KL we will alert the nearest SPCA. In very dire situations Selangor SPCA will make the necessary trip.
Awareness: We are currently in the midst of drawing up Guidelines for Horse Care that will be issued out to owners, DVS and interested parties. The Guidelines will be based on international standards
Fundraising: Our funds are entirely separate from the main SPCA funds and we do all our own fundraising. We are currently in the midst of starting a small merchandising line. If you have a Hong Leong Credit Card you turn your redemption points into cash for donation to the Selangor SPCA. All of the funds raised via this channels goes towards Selangor SPCA Equine.
Supporting Equine Welfare: You can make a report to us. Once I work out how to upload the form on the blog it will be there. For now you can contact me personally or the SPCA.
You can volunteer with us. We are always in need of administrative help and can always do with a pair of extra hands. The more hands we have the more people will be aware of us and our follow up action on reported cases can become more effective.
Impact your Support Makes
Without your support there will be:
- no equine watch dog in Malaysia.
- no equine rehab centre in Malaysia.
- no unified body with the welfare of equine as paramount importance in Malaysia.
